エンジニアのパパに、「せいこうするためには、算数ができなきゃだめだ」といつも言われている、小学3年生のマックス。マックスは、時間をかければどんなもんだいだって、かんたんにとけると思っていたけれど、あるときを境に急にもんだいがとけなくなってしまう。それは、九九のテストでだれがはやくおわるか、トペル先生が時間をはかったからかも…
算数障害を取り上げた絵本『算数の天才なのに計算ができない男の子のはなし』（岩崎書店）を読んで面白かったのに、胸に何かがつっかえているようで、なんだかすっきりしない。
九九のテストはにがてだけど、「代数はすきでやっているんだ。パズルみたいでたのしいよ」と語るマックス。小学校3年生で代数ができるかはさておき、タイムを測ると計算ができなくなる、みたいな子はけっこういるんじゃないかなぁ。
