本当に、野球は左利きに有利か？

　昨日の朝日新聞夕刊「「大リーグが大好き！」を読んで思った。この、向井万起男による連載コラムによれば、大リーグで通算本塁打500本、通算安打3000本を達成した打者は4人いるという。

ハンク・アーロン（右投げ右打ち）
ウィリー・メイズ（右投げ右打ち）
エディ・マレー（右投げ左右両打ち）

そして
ラファエル・パルメイロ（左投げ左打ち）

　このうち、最初の3人は「野球の殿堂」入りを果たしているが、パルメイロはストロイド使用の疑惑がかけられているため、「野球の殿堂」入りのための記者投票で分が悪いようだ。

　ケン・グリフィー・ジュニアには大いに可能性があると向井さんは期待していたそうだが、故障が多く、キャリアの後半は苦しんだ。ケン・グリフィー・ジュニアといえば、たしか、イチローが憧れていた存在。

　パルメイロの殿堂入り、僕には反対する理由も投票権もないが（もちろん、本当にステロイドを使用していたのなら話は別だ）、それよりも、なぜ左投げ左打ちの選手がここまで「500・3000」を達成していないのか、それがわからない。野球は、左打者のほうが一塁ベースに近く、左投手よりも右投手のほうが多いはずなので、ふつうに考えれば、左打者のほうが達成しやすいようにも思える。

　左投げ左打ちの打者が「500・3000」を達成していない理由は、
・左打者のほうが少ない。
・一般的には右利きのほうが多いはず。そのため、子どもの頃から、左利きの模範になる打者が、自分のまわりに少なかった。
・左打者は一塁に近いため、内野安打が出やすい。そのため、最後まで振り切らずにスタートしてしまう、いわゆる走り打ちのようなバッティングをしてしまうことがある。この打ち方だと飛距離が出にくく、単打（ヒット）は増えても、本塁打にはなりにくい。

などだろうか。

　ちなみに、ケン・グリフィー・ジュニアは通算630本塁打、通算2871安打。500本塁打または3000安打のどちらかを達成していれば、「野球の殿堂」入りは確実とされているそうなので、5〜6年後にはメンバーに入るのは間違いないだろう。

　イチロー選手はというと、昨シーズンまでで日米通算3522安打、通算208本塁打。日米での記録を合算してくれれば、すでに3000安打は超えているが、ベースボールに関してプライドの高いアメリカでは、日本との合計は認められないはずだ。だとしても、イチロー選手はアメリカに渡ってから、昨年末までで2244安打。いま、MLBのサイトで確認したら、今季はここまで66安打なので、通算2310安打。

　イチロー選手はメジャーリーグで年平均224.4本のヒットを打っているので、これまでのペースで安打を量産したとすれば、3年後のシーズンには達成
できる計算になる。今までどおり、大きなケガをせず、活躍してほしい。
